    The Sky Garden

    The Sky Garden is an initiative supported by University of Toronto students, faculty, and staff that aims to marry healthy eating and sustainable living. They divide the harvest between volunteers, local food banks, and campus restaurants and cafes.

    The U of T Beekeeping Education Enthusiast Society (B.E.E.S.) oversees a number of rooftop apiaries across campus.  B.E.E.S. champion organic, non-intrusive beekeeping approaches, and host educational events throughout the year.

    Retrofit King's College Circle

    This project involved retrofitting the old metal halide street lights with LED lights manufactured by Osram Sylvania. The LED product was a retrofit kit, which fit inside the existing post-top luminaires.

    The Swap Shop is run by Facilities & Services and helps to reduce campus waste. Surplus furniture, office equipment, and more can be claimed here. It is regularly replenished by U of T departments removing their old furniture. See link for details.

    Bikechain is fully equipped to handle bicycle problems ranging from dirt and rust to flat tires; from loose pedals to bent wheels. The tools are the same quality as those found in commercial bike stores, specifically designed for use on bicycles.

    In late 2009, the university installed 100 solar collector panels on the roof of the Athletic Centre, located at Harbord Street and Spadina Avenue. It is currently the biggest initiative of its kind at a Canadian University

    This little area of green space does not seem like much and is often populated by children during after school hours. However, it is a nice place to sit down on a bench or on the grass to take a breather during the early mornings or on a weekend.

  • Philosopher's Walk

    Philosopher's Walk is a meandering path that borders the back of Trinity College. There is also an amphitheater and many benches around, for people to meet up for a chat or enjoy their lunches while observing squirrels and sparrows that pass by.

  • Lester B. Pearson Garden for Peace and International Understanding

    This little garden is tucked away in Victoria College's Quad. This is a great place for contemplation, especially with the sound of the gentle waterfall nearby. The area is relatively secluded with lots of bushes and trees.

  • Queen's Park

    This gigantic green space is in the middle of our campus, dividing the East side from the West. The trees here have identification plates and there are signs around the park that tell you about the history and ecology of the land.

  • U of T Food Policy Council Garden

    This is the main location for the U of T Food Policy Council's urban agricultural gardens. They garden mostly in the spring, summer, and early fall and tend to council business during the school year.

  • Front Campus

    This is one of the most iconic and used green spaces on the U of T St. George Campus. It is often pictured with the magnificent University College Building and used as a shortcut to get to class in the various buildings around King's College Circle.

    This is one of the more populated quads on campus and belongs to University College. During the summer, this is a great spot to lie down, have a picnic, or throw a frisbee around. During the colder months, this quad is a great snowball battlefield.

    This hidden gem of a quad is often unknown to many non-Knox affiliated students on campus. In the warmer seasons, it is a popular place for weddings and photoshoots. During the school year, it is a beautiful, secluded, and quiet place for meditation.

    The Terrence Donnelly Centre is one of our rare indoor green spaces! There are benches for sitting nearby and enclosed within the bamboo. This is a great place to have lunch, meditate, or doodle on a lunch break.

    This Living Wall is located on the Second Floor of the Multi-Faith Centre and it is located in the aptly named Meditation Room. It is a cozy space used as a drop in space for prayers, but is also open to any students who want to meditate.

    There is a teaching plant collection in greenhouses on the top floors of this building complex. They are open during the day and are accessible through the elevators inside the Earth Science Building. See website for information on access.

    There are six large concrete planters the front of the OISE building, each with a themed garden inside. The gardens are themed in relation to the six foundational concepts of OISE’s programs.

    In 2016, solar panels were installed on the roof of the Exam Centre, which is home to the Sustainability Office. The south-facing panels capture solar energy and use it to offset the building’s energy use.
